Suppose you are given a problem such as this:
You can enter the x and y values into your graphing calculator and use its linear regression function. Or you can use an online calculator such as EasyCalculation.com's Linear Regression Calculator.
- You will need to select "Add more..." just above the Calculate button. Create enough space for all of the values.
- Note that the x-values are the number of years since 1970. Subtract 1970 from each year in the first row of the table.
- The y-values are the life expectancy values. You will enter the life expectancy values for men, and get a linear equation. Later you'll enter the life expectancy values for women and get a second linear equation.
Once you have entered the x-values and y-values, select Calculate. The calculator will display the linear equation of the line that best fits the data.
